1 July 1897 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Thursday. 1st July [1897]. My 54 birthday—time creeps on. Today the Queen’s Jubilee was celebrated in this village. There was a procession of school children & members of different societies who marched round the village & into church at 12.30 where the Rector Mr Farrar held a service which Maria, Ruth & I went to. Afterwards there was a free dinner & tea in a great tent in a field lent by Dr Lugg. Arthur came down from town on purpose to be present & arrived at 2 just in time to make a speech proposing the Queen’s health. After the eating there were games & dancing & in the evening illuminations. Arthur had sent down for the occasion a quantity of flags & some illuminations wh had been used by his railway in London– The latter were a great delight to the rustics & when it was lighted up they stood for a long time staring at the V.R., the crown, the dates 1897 & 1837 in colour lamps. There was general contentment & good humour.
