25 December 1897 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Saturday. 25th [December 1897]. Christmas Day. Had many letters & some souvenirs. Css Pisani gave me Binet’s translation of Virgil. It was bitterly cold & I did not go out at all. At lunch we had the plum pudding I had brought from Venice—in wh was the ring, thimble, button & shilling—which amused the company vastly. Also mince pies of my bringing. We were a cheerful little party—eat & drank a great deal & were mildly happy.
