6 January 1898 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Thursday. 6th [January 1898]. Epiphany Twelfth night. Did not go out. At 5 oclock tea we had the cake with a gold ring in it & it fell to Nela in her slice. At lunch we had some Russian caviare which Marchesa Guiccioli had got straight from St Petersburg. It was in a small wooden barrel & was sent her by her brother Count Benkendorff who is one of the Court officials & gets some barrels as a perquisite when the yearly tribute of the Cossacks arrives for the Emperor in the form of caviare.
