19 January 1898 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 19th [January 1898]. Iduna took Nela to the Fenice & I sent the English servants to the Rossini to see Rigoletto. I had a faire post of the death of old Marchesa Bentivoglio née da Mula & so after going to bed I got up & went down to the pantry where I found Pasquale sitting waiting to let everybody in after their outing. I told him to tell the gondoliers the next morning to go to the funeral with our gondola & to take torches with them as is the fashion. One hires the large wax torches on the occasion—they are weighed before & after they are used & one pays for the wax wh has been consumed. I went back to bed—but as it struck me that Pasquale seemed very hoarse when he spoke to me, I got up again & went down & ordered him off to bed—telling Regina to attend to the door.
