28 February 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 28th [February 1898]. Arthur Du Cane called for me at 10.30 & we walked to Bear St Leicester Sqr to see if a dealer in birds a Mr Hawkins had any nice talking bird to sell as my brother Arthur wants to buy one. We found nothing so took a hansom & drove to the Tower—& walked on to St George St to Jamracks shop. He had a great many birds but none special clever or tame. He took us into a back shop & showed us a queer collection of Japanese curious. I spoke to him of Frank Buckland & the stories he used to tell of the Jamracks & he pointed to a stone idol of Budda & said “There that is in Mr Buckland’s book.” He showed us some Jap. carved figures & said he bought them as Mr Walter Rothschild was collecting irory joss: carvings—“& I speculate on him” he said. “He has a splendid collection, but he wont let me see it or I should know what he wants & wd be sure to sell to him—as it is now I have to speculate—& he often has the things I offer to sell him.” We were amused at the 2 Jews sharpness towards each other. I ended by buying a small “orange flanked” paraqueet & carried it off for 30/. It seems gentle & promises to be tamable. I left Arthur DC at the Temple & came home by 12– Lunched alone. Mr Faber called at 3 & told me all the Huguenot society talk. I then walked to Half Moon Street & saw Arthur who seems pretty well & was amused at my description of Jamrack. Came home to tea & then drove in hansom to Cav Sqr but Blanche has gone to Ireland—so I went on to the Murray’s in Montagu Sqr saw them & went back home. Dined alone—& to bed. Tonight the new butler Thomas Wraight came.
