18 May 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 18th [May 1898]. When I had had my breakfast in my room & went downstairs I found Arthur just being wheeled out of his bedroom into the drawing room. He had had a good night & was better. Mildred came & I took her up to see her father– She was a good deal upset to see how much altered he was. He certainly does look very altered & thin. Mary Alderson came & she & I were just starting out for a walk when close to this house we met Blanche & her little girl Gwenth coming to me—so I turned back. Mary went on with G. & took her home—& then returned here to lunch with Nellie & me. We went upstairs & had coffee with Arthur. At 3 we went for a short walk together. On our return found Arthur expecting Mr Bond’s visit. He came at 4.30. Mrs Jellico came also. Mr Ernest Clay Ker Seymer (Gertie’s husband) came to see me. He has grown to look old & dishevelled. He sat some time with me & was very chatty & pleasant. After he had had his bath & Mr Bond was gone Arthur was wheeled back to the drawing room. Ivor called & I took him up to see Arthur for a few minutes– Then Monty saw him– Arthur Du Cane came but only saw Nelly. Abt 7 Arthur was wheeled back to his bed room & asked me to sit with him– We were joined by Nellie & sat there till dinner time at 8 when we left him & when we returned after dinner found him in bed & very cross & his nurse in tears. I comforted her & left him to go to sleep. It has been a cold windy day. The papers today give very sensational accounts of poor old Gladstone who is fast dying. It seems so cruel to every detail of private life & death so public–!
