19 August 1898 — Peterborough Minster Precincts, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Friday. 19th [August 1898]. Visited the cathedral with Miss Ingram the Dean’s sister & she had the best altar cloth put on the altar that I might see it. It is made out of some old Spanish embroidery which Henry gave to the Dean & Chapter. We went to see the work being done to strengthen the walls of the Eastern chapel & had an interesting talk with old Mr Ivory Clerk of the Works of the Cathedral. After lunch Kate & I drove with Nelly & Eda to Thorney Abbey about 7 miles from Peterboro’. Cecil & Reggie & Mary came on their bycicles. Thorney Abbey is a most interesting place belonging to the Duke of Bedford. The facade of the old Abbey rises suddenly out of the flat country to a great height & is very beautiful. A part of the nave exists still & has been turned into a church. Opposite it stands a nice little house of the last century wh is occupied by the Duke when he comes once a year. The village is very pretty & the trees seem to make an oasis in the fens. We drove home by 5 o’cl & had tea & then Kate, Reggie & I walked to the N.W. Station to visit Mr Dack an employé of the railway who is a collector of old things & an antiquarian & curator of the Peterboro’ cathedral. He is an interesting man & was happy to tell stories of his various finds & purchases. I met there a Dr Barney who told me he starts tomorrow for the Gold Coast—where he is in Govt employment. He is said to be very clever. Home—dined. Miss Ingram came in & we sat out in the garden. Played a game of backgammon with Cecil– Bed–
