23 July 1899 — Dowlais House, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan
Sunday. 23rd [July 1899]. Ivor, Cornelia, Duncannon, Mr Gordon & I went to morning service in the church where my father is buried– It has been entirely rebuilt & enlarged. The old square pew remains in the corner but Ivor will not use it & the Martin family were in it today. It is to be removed altogether before long. We sat in a front seat on the left of the aisle. As we came out of church Ivor drew my attention to the stone on the chancel steps which had in large letters on it my father’s name & marked his grave. After lunch I spoke to Edward Duncannon & also to Cornelia on the Merthyr Rhuvon affair. At first Cornelia did not seem willing to help– At last she said she would speak to Ivor & I went up to my room to write letters– Soon Cornelia came to say Ivor consents to join with me in paying Rhuvon’s costs & said I might write to say so & that Ivor will telegraph in the morning great to my relief & I set to work at once to write & at 5 oclock took down my letters to find the post had gone!! However Cornelia managed to send in the letters to be posted at Cardiff by the guard of the train. Before dinner Ivor & the others signed the new agreement about the management of the works– At 6 Ivor & I went to evening service. Dinner at 8.30– Bed at 11–
