15 November 1899 — Trent
Wednesday. 15th [November 1899]. I woke at 7 with a violent headache. After taking a little brandy & a dose of phenacetine I got up & hoped to be able to get thro’ the day—so I went down to breakfast at 9 oclock. But we had hardly sat down to table when I felt much worse & had to fly from the room & just got to my own room before I was very sick & then managed to get to bed with a fearful sick headache & feeling terribly faint & shaking from head to foot. I was so ill that I asked to see H.M.’s Dr & he prescribed for me & was good eno’ to come 3 times to see me. H.M. was good eno’ to come up herself to see me before her lunch. There I lay in great suffering all day. The Bss came two or 3 times & the Empress sent me constant messages. I also had a visit from Bss Salvadori (née Marcello) whom I had known as a child. She stayed only a few moments.
