17 November 1899 — Trent
Friday. 17th [November 1899]. Breakfasted with H.M. & her household at 9 & then retired to our rooms till 11 when we all went for a walk. We found it still windy but not so rough as it was yesterday. We went to a bell foundry kept by one Chiappani to see for an old church bell as I want to have one for the English Church at Venice. The master of the hotel Herr Oesterreicher accompanied us & showed us the way. We found a nice small old bell with a pretty tone which I at once decided to have for our church. It is dated 1730 & has some pretty ornaments on it & was very inexpensive. The Empress recommended me to take it & said she would contribute towards the payment of it—so I did not hesitate. We walked back through the town & went into a shop to look at the velvetines wh are of Austrian make & much admired. We lingered there some time & then returned to the hotel & dressed for lunch. B & Bss Salvadori lunched with Her Majesty having driven in from their villa Margone. They left about 2.30 & then we set out for a walk & returned at 4.30. Took tea at 5 & retired again to our rooms till dinner at 8. Afterwards H.M. & I talked & worked together till the household had finished their whist & we retired for the night.
