31 December 1899 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Sunday. 31st December [1899]. Here we are at the last year of this year & of the 1800– What will happen to us & to the country God alone knows in the next century! One cannot help feeling very depressed when one looks back at the events of this past year & a certain gloom hangs over me wh I find it difficult to shake off. The Countess & I talked much of the War & I read aloud to her some of the Transvaal from Within by Fitzgerald. I took an hour’s walk in the garden in the afternoon with the white dog– We dined at 7 & I read aloud again in the evening till bed time at 10.
