11 January 1900 — En route to London
Thursday. 11th [January 1900]. Coffee brought to me at 8 after a comfortable night. Got to Calais at 2– Had smooth crossing. At Dover found myself in the same railway carriage as my little English companion in sleeping car. Arrived at Charing X at 5.15—& got to 3 Savile Row 5.30. Nellie Alderson was there not very well. She says the old German lady told me a story—Ladysmith has not fallen & has repulsed the Boer attack most brilliantly. I regret now not having bought a newspaper on the way yesterday, but I was afraid of reading the details of the fall of the place. We dined at 8 & went early to bed. Monty is in town & looked into the room while I was dining to salute me. Even old Turk the dog was glad to see me.
