18 May 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 18th May [1900]. Miss Hogarth came to luncheon. I had such a headache & was feeling so ill I could hardly manage to keep up & talk rationally. Aimée & Nellie helped me through. Mr Williams communicated with me by telephone to say all arrangements were complete for sending off the cook & 2 ward maids– I had a final interview with the cook. Mr Williams came at 2.30 to see a cable message I received from Dr Wainwright asking if our servants had started. As soon as he was gone I rushed into my bed & there remained for the rest of the day. Blanche came to see me & sat a little while. I slept a great deal being thoroughly exhausted. Aimée dined out, I in bed, Nellie in the studio. About 9.30 I woke from a daze hearing shouting in the street. My maid rushed & bought a newspaper & sure enough there was the news of the relief of Mafeking—this time it is true & after 9 months’ suffering Col. Baden Powell will being out safely his brave little garrison. The town evidently went mad. When Aimée returned she was in the greatest excitement—Sir Wm & Lady de Voeux her host & hostess had driven her through the crowded streets to see the enthusiasm & she was quite astonished at it & delighted at the extraordinary sight & cannot believe that she is among the soberminded English. The shouting & singing went on till quite late & the excitement was tremendous.
