12 September 1900 — Schloss Friedrichshof, Kronberg
Wednesday. 12th [September 1900]. Breakfast at 9.30. H.M. pretty well & not quite so lame. When I returned to my room to dress to accompany the Empress on her morning drive in the poney chair I found a letter from Onie Ponsonby announcing her engagement to Mr Browne Guthrie son of Lord Oranmore—& one from her mother saying she was pleased with the match. H.M. had started when Ola & I got down so we followed & found her in the stable yard examining an old carved chest in the carpenter’s shop. From there we went to the old Burg (castle) & H.M. walked about a good deal leaning on my arm. Princess Margaret & the 2 baby twin boys were with us. H.M. took us also into the old chapel wh she is having repaired & where she has discovered a very curious & ugly old fresco. We returned to the Schloss by abt 11.30 & I wrote letters of congratulation. Dressed & went out to lunch at 1.30. An old General Loë lunched here– Afterwards we took coffee on the terrace & then I had to show Pss Teo the divining rod business on the lawn. It was a fine day & nice & warm in the sun– We settled our plans today. Ola is to return to London & leaves tomorrow. They begged me to remain on another day which I agreed to do. I had even thought of making Ola wait with me but Css Perponcher thought that as the Empress had already been told of the plan we cd not alter it. I thanked her for telling us—as we did not quite know what to do– Ola & I sat & talked, read & worked in my sitting room till 4 when we dressed & went down to tea in the Hall at 4.30 with Css Perponcher & Pss Teo. Pss Margaret had a telegram from her husband saying he was arriving this afternoon & she went off with her 2 elder boys to meet him at a distant station. The Empress took Ola & me in her carriage & we drove on the road by wh Prince & Pss Charles of Hesse would return– We met Pss Margaret alone with her boys—the Prince had missed his train. I left the Empress’ carriage & returned with Pss Margaret & we took a turn together in the park to get warm on our arrival at the Schloss as the eveng was chilly. We dined latish as Prince L. Charles arrived after 8 very cross & silent after missing his early train. B. & Baroness Reischach who returned from a holiday came down to dinner & what with the Prince & the Reischach’s presence the meal was stiff & rather boring. In the smoking room it was so dull that I invented playing patience which gave a little diversion as Princess Margaret likes it. Ola went straight to bed as usual & did not join the smoking room party.
