9 November 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 9th [November 1900]. A quiet morning writing. Put one of the young conure paraqueets alone into a cage & by some stupidity left the door of the cage with the other 2 open—so of course they flew away & we gave up all idea of seeing them again. I went out in gondola to the Eden’s garden being anxious to consult Mr Eden as to whether he thought I could do more towards helping Mr & Mrs Browning to come to an understanding. He seems to think it is of no use my attempting to interfere any further– I looked into Fanny Browning’s lodgings to see her– She has now left her husband’s house & has taken a lodging in the town—she says he is so unkind to her that she will have nothing more to say to him and he will do nothing to please her—so it is a deadlock. She now wants him to acknowledge that her money is locked up in the purchase of the Palazzo Rezzonico & he refuses to listen to it. She threatens him with lawyers proceedings. He accuses her of not being in her right mind. I went home to tea uncertain what to do. Iduna came to tea & stayed some time chatting. The letters about Maria are still very unsatisfactory. The little birds are still away & we give up a hope of seeing them again.
