25 January 1901 — Rome
Friday. 25th [January 1901]. I went out in the morning to church & to call on Addie. She was out but the porter of the Hotel Europe informed me that she was leaving Rome today at 2 & so I went for a walk resolving to return at 12.30 which I did. She wants to be in England for the funeral services for the Queen—& I shall be back in Venice for the one there. I asked to see the clergyman Mr Oxenham after this morning’s service to ask him what service he was going to have here & he appointed 2 oclock for me to go to his house at the end of this street which I did & he gave me a form of what was done for the commemorative service for Prince Eddie which wd serve as a guide. He said he wd have the church draped. I wrote all this to Mr Montalba. I called next on the Curtis—then on Baroness de Reinelt at the Hotel d’Europe. Had a long talk with her. She let out to me how tired she is getting of being always with the Canevaro family—& how they bully her & she is longing to get loose from them—& is tired of their eternal fault finding I could but sympathise with her. We excepted Adl Canevaro who is really a good & loyal man– His wife with many good qualities is an “enfant gatée” and her family have a horribly fatiguing habit of fault finding. It is more habit than anything & they are really kind hearted & charitable. Later I called on the Curries but did not get in so I wrote Lord Currie to ask him about invitations for next Saturday’s service at Venice.
