27 January 1901 — Rome | |
Sunday. 27th [January 1901]. Was at morning service in the church opposite where I lodge. Everybody there was in black. The Ambassador & Lady Currie were there. After the service the funeral march was played the congregation standing. The Curries at first did not seem to understand abt it & Lady C. nudged her husband to go—when they got as far as the door they found their mistake & had to stand there making “cattiva figura”– I met Mr Curtis afterwards & he insisted on my lunching with them & then went home– Scarcely had I got there when Donna Laura Minghetti came to ask me to drive with her which I gladly did. It was lovely weather almost too hot in the sun– She brought me back at 4—by which time it was cold in the streets & damp– I received a magnificent present from Bss de Reinelt—a diamond ring—Louis XV style—beautifully set—& too smart for me who seldom wear rings. It covers my finger from joint to joint. | |
