3 February 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 3rd [February 1901]. I went to morning service. The black hangings were not yet removed– In the afternoon Mr Montalba called & Mr Hulton after which I went to the memorial service at the Sailor’s Institute. The lay reader Mr Newman had arranged suitable decorations & the portrait of the Queen was draped in the English flag. About 50 sailors were present. The band of the boys of the Protestant Industrial school was present & played a funeral march & at the close of the service also played “God save the King.” It gave one rather a choke in the throat to hear it—for it seemed to belong exclusively to the dear Queen. The German clergyman was present & offered up a prayer in German.
