5 February 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 5th [February 1901]. Weather improved. Went out in afternoon on foot to the Piazza where my gondola waited for me & brought me home. Mr Guggenheim, the antiquary came in the morning & spent a long time discoursing many things. He is a very intelligent man, self educated, but a tremendous talker—very active & does much for the good of Venice. His father was one of the humblest of Jews & had a small shop near the Camionica where Henry used to go in early days in search of old things. Henry used to employ the son to go errands & buy old things for him for a small remuneration. By degrees young G. worked his way up in the world—married a rich Austrian Jewess, & bought & restored the Palazzo Balbi. He never forgets his early connection with Henry & is always ready to show his gratitude & admiration of his early patron by his attention to me. He has undertaken to have my medal of Henry cast in bronze & the small figure that I have just done & he is interested in my humble works. After lunch I went out on foot to Piazza where the gondola met me & brought me home. Mr Montalba came to see me late & sat talking till dinner time.
