25 May 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 25th [May 1901]. Blanche sent her carriage to fetch Nellie & me & we called for Mr Burton & went to Cav. Sqr. There Nela joined us & we went to Wells Street for the funeral service at St Andrew’s in memory of Charlie Eliot. The King, Duke of Connaught, Princess Christian & the Pss of Battenberg sent representations & the church was full of the Eliot friends. The service was nearly all musical & beautifully sung especially the concluding Anthem by Spohr—& one boy had an angelic voice. It was very affecting & poor Mr Burton was dreadfully upset. It tried me a good deal & unnerved me for the rest of the day so that I felt up to nothing and remained at home till after 5 o’cl tea when Blanche called for me & took me for a drive. We went to Chelsea to see the Church sister’s Home established by Cornelia’s Ladies’ League—a house where ladies who work for the poor & are moderate Church women can lodge. Nellie & I dined quietly at home. Monty left town.
