23 August 1901 — En route to United States
Friday. 23rd [August 1901]. Lovely weather & a good deal warmer. Saw spouting of whales close by the ship & a small one jumped up out of the water & we saw him plainly. Abt 3 o’cl we passed the Kentucky light ship which has a Marconi wireless telegraph on board and we signaled to beg they would announce that the St Paul had got so far. Senator Chauncey Depew was presented to me– In the evening there was a concert in the 1st cabin presided over by Mr Depew. Mr OConor who was taking over a comic company sang songs—one of his troupe a girl played the cornet admirably—there was a clever recitation &c & a speech from the chairman who was humourous but had a good opinion of his powers. He is a dignified good looking old gentleman & is also considered rather a wag. We are to arrive at our journey’s end early tomorrow morning. After a most splendid passage no fog & very little wind—& it was so peaceful that one is almost sorry to have come to the end of it & to have to plunge back into the world again. We have everything ready packed only keeping open our night bags.
