25 August 1901 — Dolobran, Haverford, Pennsylvania
Sunday. 25th August [1901]. We all breakfasted at 9. Mrs Griscom took me to a church very prettily situated not very far off. As we had to wait for the carriage to take us there & there was some mistake in the ordering of it we only got there as the 1st lesson was being read. Mrs Griscom told me she did not know our service well & begged me to find her places in the book for her. The church was a handsome one—the singing good & the organist played well. The service was much the same as ours in England—but the tendency was “High.” The sermon was not well delivered long and monotonous. As most of the villas round about here are now empty the congregation was not large. We lunched at 1.30 & rested till 4 when Mr Griscom took us for a drive. I sat by him & Mrs G. & Nellie sat behind us. We went through lovely country past charming villas– The country reminded one of England with a mixture of Switzerland & N. Italy. There are large fields of Indian corn, streams, woods & undulating ground. We drove to the Schuylkill River which is broad & swift & now was on freshet after the late heavy rain. We went to a little farm called “Monk’s hill” belonging to our host where there was a beautiful view & a very extensive one. The whole country is now beautifully green & bright. The weather is hot but tempered with a delightful little breeze & it is delicious sitting out under the trees.
