7 September 1901 — Dolobran, Haverford, Pennsylvania
Saturday. 7th [September 1901]. The maids arrived at 6 in the morning having come by a night train. The President is still alive. The bullet in the stomach has been searched for but not found the wounds in the stomach have been sewn up. The shot in the heart glanced off the bone & is only a superficial wound. The would be murderer is a Pole. He came up ostensibly to shake hands with the President having the pistol concealed in his right hand by an apparent bandage. He was knocked down by a negro & nearly lynched but the police secured him & saved him. We spent a quiet day resting from our late busy week. Mr & Mrs Bettle dined at Dolobran & Mr & Mrs Rod & a Mr Wildin arrived from Southampton on business.
