9 October 1901 — En route to London
Wednesday. 9th October [1901]. we found on waking that we were just in the channel & we were near eno’ to the shore to recognise the coast of Dorset—Purbeck, Swanage, Bournemouth &c—& then the needles & the Solent & we landed at Southampton at 11.30. Mr Griscom’s agent met us—passed our luggage & put us into a reserved compartment of the train that was waiting in the docks & we sped away up to London getting there at 1.30. Austin met us to help Baker with the luggage & we drove off to 3 Savile Row, Emilia, Nellie & I. I found a lot of letters waiting for me so I remained quietly & read them. I found on arrival that Monty was just going off to Inwood so I gave him some old Spanish jewelry I had brought him over from America on approbation. Louis Du Cane called to see me. He gives a better account of his mother & says he wishes I would go down to Bournemouth to see her—on the chance of being allowed to do so. I said I would go certainly & I wrote to Nela to offer myself & asked for an answer by telegraph.
