12 October 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 12th [October 1901]. I went with Emilia de Riaño to lunch with Mr & Mrs Adams in Lexham Gardens. Met there Mr Somers Cocks who is going soon to Venice for a long stay. I intended to go down to Bournemouth by at 3 o’cl train so I had to hurry away to Waterloo Station directly after lunch. Mr Adams is 1st Secy of our Embassy at Madrid. His wife is American & very charming. The daughter of abt 13 is a splendid pianist but had unfortunately had a carriage accident & broken a shoulder bone– The son a boy at school has had to leave on account of a weak heart so poor Mrs Adams has many troubles & the husband does not get promotion. When I got to Waterloo I was told not to go by the 3 o’cl train as there was a better one at 3.10. I therefore waited & was just getting into that train when the guard said “You are surely not going by this one the one which leaves at 4 passes this one”– I therefore patiently waited till 4 & at last started off. I got to B’mouth Central Station abt 6.20 & drove to Branksome Dene. I found Richard there, Nela, Ruth, Issie & a cousin Freda DC. & a Miss Morton– Maria is said to be a good deal better & there is good hope I may be allowed to see her tomorrow. We retired early to our rooms but Nela sat talking to me till late in the night.
