3 November 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 3rd November [1901]. Verona & I went to Morning service & then to the Eden’s garden to get chrysanthemums which are now in their beauty. Afterwards we went to see Mrs Hulton & have tea with her. There was a procession at the Church of SS. Giov. e Paolo opposite her house—the most picturesque thing possible– Nuns & little children in white carrying candles & torches—& priests singing &c– The whole procession finally brought up to a monstrous figure of the Virgin seated in a gilt chair. She had been taken on a visit to the church of Sa Giustina! These processions wh have been prohibited for some years past are beginning to creep out again & the clerical element in the city is very much increasing—so much for the new century! Coming away from Mrs Hulton Verona slipped on the stairs & hurt her neck in falling.
