10 December 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 10th December [1901]. Mr Murray & Sophy Palmer left me for Bologna where they stay tonight & then he goes to England & she on to Rome for the Winter. I had hoped she would have stayed on here but she was anxious to get away & as she will never go out in a shut gondola it is better she should be where she can go in an open carriage. Now Emilia & I are left alone. Had my usual evening reception. The French Consul & Mme Le Maillé came & brought with them M. Levadé a young French musician who has taken great prizes at the Academy at Rome & is a rising composer. Mme Bompard came also & sang Mr Levadé’s songs. They also played a piano duett the overture of Lohengrin very well—but after they had done & I advanced to compliment them Mr Levadé said to me “Savez vous que votre piano m’a fait lutter. C’est un fort vieux piano, au moins vous pouriez faire [illegible word]!”– This is a specimen of French politeness.
