30 December 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 30th [December 1901]. Wrote letters—sent cards all the work of the season– After lunch I went out on foot to the Piazza. As I went out of my door I met Mr Byard who came to enquire after me having heard of my indisposition. We walked together & he left me at the Piazza & I walked home. My first gondolier was away today as his child a baby is just dead—suffocated by lying on its face. Had a visit from the Harstons at tea time also the Haans. Mr Woods & Iduna Belmondo dined with us. Mr Woods told us prison stories & we all vied in telling gruesome stories.
