2 April 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. [2nd April 1902]. Got up after breakfast. Did accounts & paid servants wages– After lunch I thought of going out but gave it up as it was not very bright. I went downstairs for my meals. Trombini called while I was at lunch– Mme Noce called & Mr Edward Martin of Dowlais who has been here with his family for a week & leaves tonight for Spain. He was submanager of Dowlais works under Mr Clark for many years & now is one of the Directors of the New Co Guest Keen & Co. His father was in my father’s employ also & was a familiar face to me & made me feel sad to think the old place has quite passed from us—the old order has changed giving place to new. Mrs Hulton came to tea with me & after that Mr Hulton came to talk over the sailor’s Institute. Then came Mme Rubini to announce to me that her daughter Annie is engaged to marry a naval officer which is a capital thing for many reasons. Then just before dinner Iduna rushed in for a few minutes fresh from a party at the Admiral’s in command for the French ship—& then I went to dinner with my book—played patience & to bed at 10.30.
