27 April 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 27th April [1902]. Went to morning service with the Villiers & walked afterwards. I went to pay Bss Reinelt the promised visit & at last found her alone & had a long chat. She was very full of the report that the Papadopoli-Arrivabene marriage is broken off & says there are horrid stories afloat as to the whole family & of the fiancé—wh shows how vile are the minds of this society. The Prefect & Elsie Cassis lunched with us. Afterwards I had a visit from Mme Fanny Salazar who is editing “the Italian Review” & is very anxious to interest me in it. She is a fine handsome woman—rather too showy & enticé in her dress– At 4 I took Ct Seckendorff & Pss Taxis in gondola to S. Nicolo on the Lido & there we landed & walked to S. Elisabetta. A great storm hovered over the whole sky & threatened to deluge us. The effect was splendid black clouds hanging all round, but luckily the rain did not fall until just as we got home just in time for 8 oclock dinner.
