25 June 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 25th [June 1902]. Our first thought on waking in the morng was for news of the King & when our tea was brought at 7 A.M. we at once scanned the papers. The afternoon of yesterday was passed as well as could be expected—& the danger must continue for many hours more. Kate went away to lunch with Blanche & I remained at home. It was too hot to think of walking out. At 4 Nela & Mary Alderson fetched me in Blanche’s brougham & we drove to Buckingham Palace for me to write my name on Pss Sophie, Duchess of Sparta & I left a note for her saying how much I wished to have seen her. From there to Dorchester House to leave ones name on the Dss of Aosta & home to 5 o’cl tea. Then I took a walk to S. Audley Street to see Adeline Bedford. She is staying there for the season. The crowds in the streets are already immensely diminished tho’ there are still many going abt to see the decorations wh are gradually disappearing but slowly. Some of the royal guests have already left the country. There were still many royal carriages driving about with the servants in red livery & traffic was heavy. I went to dine with the Ponsonbys to meet Mr & Mrs Griscom & Mrs & Mr Rodman Griscom– Kate & Nellie dined with the Humphreys & Nela dined with the Eliots. Evening bulletin of the King’s health are satisfactory.
