18 September 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 18th September [1902]. We were at afternoon tea when Ida Belmondo looked in and said someone wanted to see me in the long hall– I went there & found Princess Charlotte of Saxe-Meiningen—to our mutual delight—we had not met since the dear Empress Frederick’s death– The Princess talked of old times, her mother & the past—and cried bitterly. She said she felt all her sorrows renewed on coming to Venice & on seeing me of whom she said, the Empress had been so fond—& that she had said to the Princess the last time she spoke to her—“You will always find a good friend & true in Lady Layard.”– Pss Charlotte has been in Venice these 15 days past & will remain another 3.
