13 July 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 13th [July 1903]. Did accounts—wrote letters—painted copy. Visit fm Sr Boni the head man of the jeweller Missiaglia. Showed him my Venetian bead chains & he was so pleased with one that he bought it of me (for good of the hospital) to take home & copy in real gold. After lunch I had a visit from Mr Francisco Pietri who came to say that the Empress not being well & being abt to leave Venice the day after tomorrow had given up the idea of coming to tea with me. I suddenly recollected that I had promised to go to tea with Mr & Mrs Merrick at the Hotel d’Europe so when M. Pietri left I rushed off there in gondola– This dear old American couple received me most kindly & were happily alone so that I had a pleasant chat with them. They have been in Venice 3 years to look after her sister [who] is a terrible invalid & rather queer in the head. I went from there to the Eden’s garden where I met Genl de Horsey & Ersilia Canevaro & her sister– Carry & I went over to the hospital garden to see what Pasquale has done there. Really he has shown taste & talent & made it very nice. I got back in time for dinner & did not go out again in the evening.
