15 July 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 15th [July 1903]. Began to try & model a St George & the Dragon for the Church porch here—& worked hard till 4 o’cl with only short interval for lunch. At 4 cleaned & dressed myself & went downstairs. Mrs Denny came to tea & to say she is leaving Venice tomorrow. A sad life—a husband who drinks & cannot settle down anywhere– A nice little woman—gentle & good. The 2 Misses Underwood came also. They brought me letter of introduction from Mme Riaño. Pretty ladylike American damsels who have lately been in Spain. After they all left I went off in gondola to the Eden’s garden & sat with them breathing in the pleasant cool air of the lagune till past 7. Then home to dinner. Then came a note from Marchesa Villamarina saying that the Regina madre proposes to come tomorrow about 10 o’cl to see my pictures if it suited me. I responded suitably & told my servants to be in readiness. I then went out in gondola & took Carry Eden for a row. Passing by their garden I ordered some fresh flowers to be sent to me in the morning.
