19 October 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 19th [October 1903]. I was better & had to get up as at 9 the hairdresser came to wash my hair to keep it white– A woman recommended to my by Sr Arbib came to bring me some beads & gave me a lesson in stringing them. Nela & Verona went to the Frari & had their first lesson in bookbinding wh I am making them learn. Violet went out alone in gondola. At 12 I went off to the Prefettura to a lunch party after the new baby’s christening. Carry Eden was there & relations & friends of the Cassis—some of them English. The godmother was English & Protestant & Elsie was furious because they had for that reason refused to allow the godmother to hold the child at the font. The [illegible word] Mins: Paganuzzi was there & after lunch I found myself in conversation with him, he asked me abt the hospital & whether we would accept Roman Catholics there. I said religion was free to all there & we only occupied ourselves with the ailments of our patients & I begged him to send any foreigners who were sick to us. On leaving the Prefettura I came home at 3 & took the 3 girls out in gondola to the Eden’s garden & to the hospital to show it to Nela. Came home by 5. To my intense relief I this morning got letters from Nellie wh explains everything. They were married last month & stupidly kept it secret & now write to tell me & ask my advice. I wrote at once to tell them to publish it.
