15 December 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 15th December [1903]. Cav. Arbib & Marzollo came to see me in the morning having just returned from London, to tell me the result of their negociations how they have succeeded in buying the Venezia Murano shares wh were in the hands of Jesurum & that Cav. Barbon, who is at the head of the big society for bead making here has also consented to enter into the affair—there are still certain formalities & arrangements to be made but in the end Sr Arbib is certain of success– So far then my anxieties on this scare are at an end. I hope that the good for Venice that Henry began so many years ago may be carried on. I presented Mr Arbib with a pearl (bead) Bayadere necklace that I had made for his daughter & he took it away for her. Verona Brooke left by 2 o’cl train for Paris on her way to London where she will arrive tomorrow night at midnight. She was sorry to go poor child & I to part with her—she is clever & good—& she says that her friendship with me is a help to her. As soon as I had seen her off at the station I returned home. I had to take Mme Wiel to see the Cos. Hospital wh she had not yet seen. We thence went to the Piazza for a short walk & then home. I “received” my friends in the evening– Not very many came. The Prinseps dined. They arrived in Venice last week & are living in Miss Wiel’s flat on the Zattere.
