29 April 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 29th April [1904]. Directly after lunch I went off to call on Bss Reinelt at Hotel Victoria and found her frantic with the Morosini & much excited. She said she had accused Morosini to her face of being the Kaiser’s mistress & had said she wd see no more of her—that finally the M. had gone down on her knees & begged her pardon & begged her to remain her friend. She evidently had been very bad & cruel to her! It almost made one forgive her sins—especially as the abuse of her is so great it makes a reaction in her favor in ones mind. The Prefect dined with us as his wife is absent & he said he felt the same. After dinner he took Eda & me to the Fenice to hear the concert wh was conducted by Mascagni the composer. The Prefects box is next to the Morosini’s & she & I sat back to back the whole evening. She kept talking to me the whole time a sort of demonstration I suppose to show the public that I approved of her!
