2 May 1904 — Rome
Monday. 2nd [May 1904]. I sent Baker in the morning to fetch Eda from her hotel to see me & she sat talking till nearly 12 when I had to go down to lunch & she went to lunch with Css Pasolini at Palazzo Sierra– After lunch when we had sat talking a little with the Queen in the red drawing room she rose & said she wanted to show me the plate & china rooms. They are on the ground floor of the Palace & are most beautifully kept. The plate being as well kept as it generally is in England. I said this to the Queen wh pleased her immensely. She said it was a great compliment & repeated what I had said to the Mar: Villamarina. The trays for the early breakfasts were all arranged in a row & I recognised the dainty arrangement which came up to my room. The china & glass is arranged in glass cases & is very pretty & well chosen. Some china H.M. brought back on her journey towards the N. Pole—some of the glass is from our Venezia-Murano Co at Venice. When we returned to the drawing room the Queen made one of her gentlemen set the gramophone going. She likes it very much & was interested when I recognised an English peal of bells & a church hymn “Abide with me.” I went out driving at 4 with Css Brandolin in the royal carriage. Everywhere we were saluted by guards, police &c & we laughed & said how amusing it was to find ourselves in such a distinguished carriage wh brought us so much honor. I called on Ada Dss di Sermoneta & finding her at home had 5 o’cl tea with her. Walked back to the Palace from there. Dinner at 8.30 as usual.
