12 June 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 12th [June 1904]. I went to morning service & afterwards took Carry Eden to her house & then went on to the Hotel Victoria & paid a visit to Baroness Reinelt: then home. At 1 went to lunch with Mrs Curtis & Lady Kenmare. Mr Curtis was not visible being indisposed. Mrs Wynn Finch & Miss Thesiger were there very pleasant people. Mrs W. Finch née Chateris is a young widow; her husband was killed in the Transvaal. I had not met her since 1881 at Canford when she first came out. I took her & Miss T. back to her hotel & then went on home. After tea I went for a row to the Eden’s garden & sat talking some time. The Cassis joined us. Came home at 7 changed my dress & went off to the service at the sailor’s Inst: with Baker. Walked home with Mr Harston who tells me that the marriage of Mr B. Browne is not a settled thing. I fear the mother is scheming for it.
