1 July 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 1st July [1904]. My 61st birthday! I took the Dss out in gondola to the Piazza to shop. She left by 2 o’cl train for London. Signor Arbib came at 4 to tell me that all has been arranged in London about the V. & Murano Co. It is not to fall into the hands of Jesurum after all & he Arbib is to be at the head of affairs—& I now hope matters may come right & the Co hold up its head. He remained to tea with me after which I went out & called at the Hotel Victoria & took Bss Reinelt for a row—to the public gardens where we sat a long time talking. She is an unhappy woman with all her money—all her children unkind to her, all her friends making up to her for her money & she can trust no one. It is rather pathetic and she clings to me. She leaves Venice tomorrow for Sistiana where she takes baths so we took leave of each other. After dinner Genl de Horsey called for me & took me for a float in gondola. Before dinner Sister Katherine came to have the months hospital account paid. After dinner the Genl de Horsey called for me & took me out in his gondola for a float till 11– It was a very still hot evening.
