7 November 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 7th November [1904]. I had been to the Cos: Hospital this afternoon to see how things were going on & then to see the Edens in their garden. I was saying that I had decided to go to England abt 15th to spend the winter there. Mr Eden tried to persuade me saying I should find it better in Venice. I told him that one of my reasons for going was that I was rather anxious as to my brother Merthyr’s health wh I feared was not good, & that I had rather be absent from Venice in the winter than in the summer. I left the garden & went home—several people came to tea—amongst them Clara Montalba. I told her she must stay & dine with me & we were joking & laughing when a telegram was brought in. Clara said she hated the sight of a telegram. I said “Oh yes but I think I know that this is from Q. Margherita inviting me to Stupinigi”– What was my horror to read “Merthyr died on Saturday night”—no signature & I had had no letter. After I had recovered the shock I wondered what had happened but I got no news for 3 days but I arranged everything & started home on
