14 May 1905 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 14th [May 1905]. We all went to morning service at 10.30 except Seckendorff, the Princess & Donna Laura. The Bishop wore his Drs robes & Mr Harston carried his silver pastoral staff before him. The church was very full. In the afternoon I accompanied Da Laura & Seckendorff & the Princess to Countess Morosini’s. She had invited them to dine or lunched with her, but Da Laura wd not hear of leaving me at meals & I could not leave my guests so a compromise was affected by my taking them there to tea today. Soon after 5 I had to leave them & to go to the afternoon service to meet the Bishop– He remained afterwards talking to Mr Harston & I brought Mrs C. home. At 7 I went to the Sailor’s Inst: with the Dss & then at 7.30 came Mr Harston & the Bishop for the service for the sailors. We got home late & dined at abt 9. Da Laura has made great friends with the Bishop—they generally sat side by side at meals. Now one knows him better one likes him & he unbends. In the evening he was kind eno’ to put on his canonicals & bring down his staff that my foreign guests might see the costume of an Anglican Bishop. Da Laura was enchanted.
