13 February 1906 — Mandalay
Tuesday. 13th [February 1906]. Accompanied by old Mr Browne, Nela & I went down in the tram to the town to have another look at Ma Chin’s shop & a turn round the Bazaars—& back again for 10 o’cl tea breakfast– We then prepared to leave lovely Mandalay & finished up our packing. Then about 2 we went off to the station. It was a very full train but we had ordered our reserved carriage & so were as comfortable as the circumstances allowed of. The beds are of the hardest & the line is badly laid so that there was a great rocking & jolting & I slept little. Arrived at Rangoon we were straight to “Allendale.” Kind Mr Angelo had sent a P.O. mail cart to convey our luggage. I rested all the morning but felt so knocked up that I declared I cannot go on to Japan but must return home from Ceylon. Nous verrons. The Brownes who had intended going to the Strand Hotel & could not get rooms then joined us at “Allendale.” At 4 Mr Angelo came & we drove into town to the saw mills of Messrs Foucar & Co to see their elephants at work moving the timber– A curious thing it is how intelligent these animals are & what an immense deal of work they get thro.– There was one who pushed a huge log along with his tusks aided by his forefoot. He did all his work by a sign from his driver who only conveyed his orders by kicking his heel on the animal’s neck. We dined at Govt House with Sir Herbert & Lady White. A family party & the 3 A.D.C. Miss Dorothy White plays the violin most beautifully & is very musical. She accompanied the singing of a Mr Christie who has a lovely voice & sang charmingly. Capt. Fraser (one of the ADC) also sang part of some music of wh he had written the words. Both our host & hostess are very kindly pleasant people. The Govt House is a grand building not very suitable to the place—being more like a big Italian Palazzo–
