26 February 1906 — Anuradhapura
Monday. 26th [February 1906]. Had to be up betimes as we left Anuradhapura by 7.50 train. We reached Polgahawela Junction abt 1 & having to wait there we went to the little rest house a few yards from the station. We had telegraphed ahead to order lunch there. The rest house keeper met us & showed us the way to it. It is a queer little place very much open to the winds for coolness—not over clean & the beds did not look inviting but we got an excellent lunch & sat still afterwards dosing & reading & watching the chamelions who were almost lame. It was excessively hot—so that one could not go out & explore. At 4 we returned to the station & were amused watching a train being shunted on wh were trucks full of wild animals, tigers, lions, cats, dogs & which were being conveyed by some circus people. The poor beasts looked hot & panted & one could not help commiserating them. When the train arrived from Colombo we found Baker in it having come from the hospital restored to health to rejoin us. There was a restaurant car on the train in wh we got tea. In the same compartment with us there were 2 ladies who recognised me having travelled from Jullundur to Amritzar with me– They are Australians & have been making a tour of India. The railway up to Kandy is through endless tea gardens & thro’ hilly country—very picturesque & the vegetation lovely. We reached Kandy at 5 & went to the Queen’s Hotel wh is large & very full of travellers. After dinner we sat in the verandah & abt 9.39 had a visit from the Chief Justice Sir Charles Layard who is now here on Circuit. He is a pleasant looking man & was very cordial to us.
