8 May 1906 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 8th [May 1906]. The morning papers announced that our Queen was coming here today from Florence. I wrote to the Consul telling him to telegraph to say I put this house at H.M.’s disposal. She had already left & was expected here at 7 P.M. But she arrived by special train at 2 P.M. & went to the Grand Hotel. I went out in the afternoon & returned home to tea. Iduna called so we went out together to the Piazza in the hopes of meeting the Queen which sure eno’ we did under the Procurator. As she saw me coming she said “Dont curtsey to me or they will know who I am” & then we stopped & talked. She was carrying little parcels of cards & beads wh she had bought to her great delight. Princess Victoria was with them, Miss Knollys & a gentleman. The Queen said she wanted to go out shopping with me tomorrow & so we parted. I saw her afterwards from the distance going in to another shop. I had my usual evening reception—lots of English passing through—no Italians as there was a party going on given by the Bucintoro society in celebration of their having won a race at the Olympic games.
