27 July 1906 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 27th [July 1906]. Better & up & about. Mrs Johnston called at tea time bringing her sister in law with her. The General also came & stayed after they left to hear me try over some old Spanish songs– He had been in Spain with the Spanish legion & had there learnt the Guitar & Spanish songs. By the loss of his arm a great pleasure & occupation is lost to him, poor man, but he played on the piano with his right hand some airs & sang them charmingly. When he left I went to see Guggenheim & settled with him about painting the ceiling & walls of the small card room next my boudoir. It is to be done for 123 fcs & promises to be very nice. I went on to the hospital but found every one busy with an operation so I went on for a row & came home as a storm was threatening—distant thunder & heavy clouds. It prevented my going out after dinner as there was much lightening.
