18 November 1906 — Stupinigi Palace, Turin
Sunday. 18th [November 1906]. First breakfast in bed then got up & wrote. Mme Villamarina paid me a visit to talk over her English daughter in law & her unhappy son. She says she would have nothing to do with him for a long time but that now he is repentant & is studying to become a Dr & working among the poor she has pardoned him but she think his wife had better keep away from him & leave him to work & hopes I will recommend her this line of action. I am sorry for the poor mother who has suffered thro’ the disgraceful behaviour of a son. We went to mass at 11.30 & I read my psalms & said my prayers during the service. Directly after we lunched (12) & there were 2 stranger guests whose names I did not catch. I took my book of “Five minutes” poetry with me to show the Q. the photo of the Taj & she looked thro’ the book & then offered to write her name near the date of her birthday 20th next Tuesday. It was a kind thought & I value it. She worked at chains till 3 when she gave her usual Sunday audiences & I went to my room & wrote on till tea. After tea a young prodigy violinist [illegible word] Scolari came to play before H.M. She is 12—& very small for her age & really played with wonderful agility & feeling. It is rather pathetic to see these small geniuses doing what is so unnatural & must be so bad for their nerves. But the child is simple & unaffected. The father who brought her, was in eveng dress & radiant. The lady Signa Annovazzi who accompanied her on the piano played also with much agility & much thumping. The Queen spoke very kindly to them all & sent them away happy.
