28 October 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 28th [October 1907]. I had a visit from Clara & Hilda Montalba who stayed some time in the morning. They are always charming women. Mrs Curtis came also to see me. I gave them all pots of plants begonias as raised in my belvedere by my old servant Pasquale. I went after lunch to the hospital to get my knee massé & also to see the last touches put to the rooms—the alterations & enlargements being at last finished. I paid a visit to the 3 paying patients who are still there. One is a young American who has thro’ the failure of the Knickerbocker Bank lost every penny he possesses & talks of returning home “to begin over again.” Poor man. He promises to pay his bill to the hospital as soon as he can make some money. He has now just eno’ to carry him back home. He bears his loss very bravely. On returning home I had a visit from the new Prefect Count Navelli-Rocca who was most polite & pleasant. I asked him to see about giving the permission to use the new rooms at the hospital. We have asked for it a month ago & have had no answer. He promised to do so & assured me I might depend upon him for anything in wh he might be of use. It is a valuable thing in his country to have friends in high places.
