13 April 1908 — Rome
Monday. 13th [April 1908]. I left Rome by 9 o’cl train. Sir Edwin & John accompanied me to the station & Mrs Whitaker also came to bid me good bye. Had compartment to myself as far as Florence where 3 American ladies joined me & went on to Venice. They were nice people—3 generations & we made friends– To my surprise the young lady said “May we know the name of our fellow traveller?”—then proceeded to tell their names wh I think was Hubbard. It is so American that the youngest of the party should be the most forward. I murmured that my name was Layard & changed the conversation. Reached Venice at 9.40 & by ten was at home– Glad of tea & bed. It rained hard all the journey.
