23 June 1908 — Mezzaratta, Bologna
Tuesday. 23rd June [1908]. Delicious weather—a nice breeze– After lunch a photographer came up from town to make photographs of Da Laura & me in the Church of the villa. It is no longer used as a church & Da Laura has arranged it with old wooden stalls & tables & bookcases. At the East end she has built a large hooded chimney. The old frescos on the walls have been saved from decay & the place is swept & garnished. This was used as a church for many centuries till abt 40 years ago. It is half way (mezza ratta) to the still existing Convent on the top of the hill. Da Laura who is full of artistic ideals set her heart on having photographs of herself & me in our loose white summer garments seated in one of the center stalls in wh she declared we represented the “Lady Abbess.” The idea was artistic [illegible word] à voir how it will be carried out. We sat in the garden & I had 5 o’cl tea on the terrace looking down over the town & plain. After dinner we played double patience till bed time– It was sad to think that this pleasant little visit is over & that I must leave Da Laura tomorrow to start for London.
